Lovin' Your Body

So I have been hearing A LOT of talk lately about people not being happy with their body. And I'm hearing it everywhere, even at Macy's today. The reason I bring this up is because it makes me so sad that people are having such a difficult time loving their bodies and themselves. So today I'm not going to give recipes or my lame jokes, I'm going to try to talk about something more serious.

You are more than a number on a scale and that tiny imperfection you may see in the mirror.

Don't get me wrong, if you're not at a healthy weight (this includes having a low body weight) I couldn't be more supportive of you being healthful. Eat your fruits and veggies, walk your dog and see a dietitian.

With that being said, please don't crash diet or make any drastic changes without the help of a professional. The reason I say this is because I can't even tell how much false information I have heard, especially on the internet. For example, someone recently told me that they just needed to eat less calories than they were burning at the gym. SO. COMPLETELY. WRONG. Your body needs energy to function and that requires calories, there isn't any way around that! Your body needs calories to just get you up out of bed, walk to the couch, help your brain function, make your cells do their job and everything else your body does to support you. And no, this doesn't include what you burn by walking to class, going to the gym or studying, you need more than YOUR basic number to have the energy you need to do what you want. Obviously, every person has a different rate. So what I'm saying is please don't go crazy with limiting your calories because it could be harming your body if you're limiting too much.

On the other hand, just because you need a certain amount of calories, doesn't mean that you eat 2,000 calories worth of chips, beer and candy. Instead try things like oatmeal, yogurt, avocados and beans. Then add fruit and veggies of course!

As I said above, health is not a number on a scale and every person is healthy at a different weight and shape. This also goes for those girls who look like they might fall through a crack in the sidewalk. If those girls aren't eating well also, that doesn't mean they're healthy at all if they aren't eating well.

The reason I bring this up is because you only get one body. Ever. And I want everyone to be happy with who they are. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss says "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than you!"

And here's another, I know that we all have things about our body that we don't exactly love, but that doesn't mean we can't be at peace with them. My "thing" is my ears. But my wonderful mother always tells me "I made those the way they are for a reason and they are beautiful." That is so true, every single person was made the way they are for a reason and being happy with that is such an amazing thing.

My point is that YOU are special and beautiful (or handsome for all the gents out there) and I hope you can find that love for yourself and your body.

Thanks for letting me go on my tangent today, I promise to be more upbeat in my next post :)
